Renuvion™

As we age our skin loses elasticity and collagen. Beautiful, smooth skin is highly desired as it provides a youthful appearance The Renuvion™ skin rejuvenation system is a minimally invasive treatment that tightens the skin by stimulating collagen production. It can be completed as standalone procedure or used in combination with other body contouring procedures.

Renuvion™ works by delivering a precise stream of cold plasma energy underneath the skin (subdermally) using a long, thin tube called a cannula. A combination of high-energy heat and the plasma’s cold temperature causes your collagen to contract and the skin to tighten. The device is inserted in tiny incisions underneath the skin.

Due to the stimulation of the collagen, improvement continues for up to 9 months after your procedure.

The Best Candidates for Renuvion™

The best candidates for the Renuvion™ procedure are individuals with laxity in their skin.  As a standalone treatment it can tighten loose skin on the body without a large incision, providing minimal scarring and downtime. When it is used in conjunction with other procedures such as liposuction, it improves the results by tightening your skin and thwarting sagging.

Planning for your Surgery

RenuvionRenuvion™, as with all surgical procedures, requires a consultation with your surgeon.  Our qualified staff will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your surgery.

If you use nicotine products, plan to quit at least 4-6 weeks before your surgery. Avoid sun exposure before and after surgery as it may interfere with your healing.

Where your surgery will be performed

Surgery is done on an outpatient basis. It will be performed at Columbia Surgery Center (our private surgical suite).

TYPES OF ANESTHESIA

The procedure can be done under general anesthesia (where you are completely asleep) or under I.V. sedation (twilight anesthesia).  This will be individualized based on the complexity of the procedure and patient preference.

THE SURGERY

To access the areas for skin tightening, several small incisions are made in the vicinity, trying to hide them in areas that are easy to camouflage.  The incisions are typically just over ¼” in size.  A solution called tumescent is injected into the area to help the cannula glid under the skin, provide anesthetic (numbing of the area), and help minimize bleeding and bruising.  The Renuvion™ cannula is then inserted in the small incisions and passed through multiple levels of the skin several times to stimulate tightening throughout the tissue.  The small incisions are then closed with sutures which are usually removed one week after your surgery.

It is important to note the limitations of the Renuvion™. Results will not be the same as if you have undergone an excisional procedure (such as a facelift, tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, etc.).

After the surgery

You can expect mild swelling and bruising. Healing for this procedure happens from the inside out. You will have to wear a compression garment on the treated area for four to six weeks, to promote healing and reduce swelling.  You will see a difference soon after your procedure with continued improvement in your skin over the next several months.

Dressings typically consist of absorbent pads and a compressive garment or ACE bandages.  You may shower 48 hours after surgery. The compressive garment or ACE bandages should be worn for two weeks after surgery at which time you can switch to Spanx or another gentle shapeware garment for an additional two weeks if desired.  The compressive garments are an essential component of the surgery as this facilitates skin contraction and speeds up the healing process.

Mild discomfort, a popping/cracking sensation, and numbness at the surgery sites is to be expected after surgery, which will usually subside in the first few days to weeks after your surgery. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor in addition to taking regular Tylenol.

Bruising and swelling is expected after surgery.  Generally the major bruising and swelling subsides 1-2 weeks after surgery.  However, the skin is not instantaneously tight after the procedure as this process takes up to 9 months to appreciate the final result.

You should not participate in any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 1-2 weeks after surgery.  Strenuous exercise includes any activities where your heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute.  We highly encourage our patients to remain active post-operatively, doing activities such as walking.  You should not life anything heavier than 10 pounds (about a gallon of milk).  It is ok to type and work at a computer.  You can slowly work back into your normal activities at 1 weeks post-operatively and should be back to your normal self at 2-3 weeks post-operatively.

When you can return to work depends on the location of your surgery, how you are healing post-operatively, and what you do for work.  Patients with sedentary jobs can return to work as early as the next day.  Patients with active jobs may require up to 1-2 weeks off work.

We highly encourage you to maintain a stable weight, healthy diet, and consistent exercise plan after surgery to maintain your aesthetic outcome.

Risks associated with Renuvion™

Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications associated with them.  In addition, every procedure has limitations.  An individual’s choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit.

The potential complications after Renuvion™ include inadequate skin tightening, infection, bleeding, seroma (fluid accumulation), asymmetry, unintended burns, scars, and temporary or permanent nerve injury.  It is important to wait at least six months after your procedure to let these issues resolve as sometimes they are secondary to swelling and will improve on their own.
