Are Botox Parties Safe?

Posted May 29th, 2019 by Social Media and filed in Botox, Plastic Surgeon Troy MI

Botox is a pharmacological injectable agent that is regulated by the FDA and is only allowed to be administered by a medical professional such as a Doctor, Physician Assistant or a Registered Nurse under the direction of a physician (varies by state).  In order to be certified to inject Botox, professionals must complete training that includes both clinical and hands-on courses. Aestheticians cannot be certified to inject Botox.

Injecting Botox for wrinkles may only be cosmetic, and it is relatively safe, however it is still a medical procedure.  Therefore is safest when performed in a medical setting. Complications can occur when the injections are not administered properly.  Your injector should review your medical history and have knowledge of any allergies. A qualified injector will thoroughly discuss the risks and possible side effects and have you sign a consent form that states you understand and accept the risks.

If you are attending a “Botox Party” outside of a medical facility, ask yourself why is this person offering it in this way?  Is it purely for marketing or social reasons? You may be paying less but is it worth it? If a problem should arise, are you going to receive the proper aftercare?  Is your injector or someone in their medical practice available 24/7 for any concerns or issues?

In my opinion, it is always “better to be safe than sorry”, especially when it is something concerning your body, health and well-being.  It’s best to choose a reputable, experienced medical professional who has been certified to inject Botox and has a medical office in which they practice.

Are Wrinkle Reducers Toxic? Learn more on how they are safe

Botulinum Toxins, such as Botox® and Dysport®, are FDA approved medical treatments for adults to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles in certain areas of the face.  These wrinkle reducers are in fact derived from Botulinum Toxin but they are not harmful in the amounts that we administer to reduce wrinkles. A harmful dose administered systemically would be 2500 to 3000 units.  We normally inject less than 100 units locally to achieve the desired results. These products cause the injected muscle to relax for approximately 3 to 4 months smoothing the appearance of the wrinkle.

Wrinkle reducers have been FDA approved for cosmetic purposes since 2002.  They have been shown to be very safe and effective when administered by trained professionals.  It is important to do your homework and seek out a licensed and certified injector who has been fully trained in safe injection technique.

Botox and Filler, learn how they are different.

Many people come into the office confused about the difference between neurotoxins like Botox® and Dysport® and fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®.   While these two treatments can be complementary to each other they are not the same thing.

Botox/Dysport are used to reduce the activity of the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles.  They are often used for dynamic lines which are the lines/wrinkles you see when you animate your facial muscles. They are mainly, but not exclusively, used in the upper face.  Most common places are between the eyes (11’s), forehead, and crow’s feet. This treatment is quick procedure, typically 5-10 minutes, and is done by injecting a tiny needle into the muscle.  There is virtually no downtime.  You may see some temporary redness, swelling, and/or bruising at the injection site.  Results take about 4-7 days to take effect and results typically last around three months. The relaxation in the muscles smooths wrinkles and gives you a more youthful appearance.

Fillers, on the other hand, are used for areas of the face that have lost volume and/or are in need of some overall plumping.  Some fillers are used to fill in an individual’s “trouble’” area with collagen or an agent that helps to stimulate collagen growth others use hyaluronic acid.  Fillers essentially plump and lift the skin.  They are used on wrinkles that can be seen on the face at rest. Some of the more common treatment areas are cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and lips, but they can also be used in other areas as well like your hands. Filler injections typically take anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on areas being filled. Typically there is little to no downtime, however, there is a risk of redness, swelling and/or bruising at the injection site. With hyaluronic fillers results are seen immediately. They may last anywhere from 6 months to more than a year depending on product and area treated. The added volume and softened wrinkles also provide for a more youthful appearance.

While Botox/Dysport and filler treatments are very different, doing a combination of both can sometimes give optimal results depending on how the individual is aging.  Our goal is to give you a relaxed natural look and to not have you appear overdone. Working with a qualified injector is key. How can I save money on Aesthetic Injections?

Everyone likes to receive something for less and aesthetic injections are no exception.  The good news is the two major pharmaceutical companies, Allergan and Galderma recognize this and want to reward you for using their products.  Both companies have point reward programs that give you money off your next injection. I know what you are thinking, another reward system to keep track of and we sometimes forget to check if we have points. No worries, we will manage it for you and ensure that you receive your discount! We will also notify you in advance if you have points expiring.

Enrolling in these programs will definitely save you money. During the month of October, Galderma is donating $25 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every NEW consumer member who joins. Save money for yourself and help save a life. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Do you clench your teeth? A different approach for relief.

Do you clench your teeth? A different approach for relief.

On the outside someone may appear to be calm and relaxed however, an interior view of their mouth tells a very different story.  One of the exciting things about medicine is often we discover that a particular drug can offer benefits to several other aliments then its intended purpose. I suffer from unconscious clenching and grinding of my teeth both during the day and as I sleep. While attending a training workshop I heard Botulinum toxins found in products such as Botox® and Dysport® can be used to relax and relieve the masseter muscle.

After further researching bruxism (the formal name for this condition) I discovered I was not alone and this is a common and painful problem that can lead to severe dental issues. Chronic teeth clenching/grinding can cause headache, earaches, facial pain, and even migraines. Bruxism sufferers who grind and clench their teeth while sleeping frequently wake up with a sore jaw.  The good news is treatments of Botox/Dysport injected into the masseter muscle can provide tremendous relief from jaw soreness, headaches, and other unpleasant problems.  The administration technique is the same which is used for wrinkle reduction. Usually three small injections are administered into the muscle on each side. This allows the muscle to relax and ease the tension in the jaw.  It may last 3 to 5 months.

It can also be used for Aesthetic corrections.  Individuals suffering from hypertrophy of the masseter muscle, can have the appearance of a severe square jaw, giving a more masculine appearance to the face.  Injecting Botulinum into this area can soften the jawline and help to reverse this.

I have clenched my teeth for years and after failed attempts to wear mouth guards, I gave up hope for any relief. After hearing about this procedure of injections into the masseter muscles I was excited to try it. I suffer from headaches and jaw soreness. The injections have worked and not only ease the stiffness in my jaw but have greatly reduced my morning headaches”. K. Stubbs

ARACHNOPHOPIA- Spider Veins

Maybe it’s not really spiders you’re afraid of, but possibly it’s those unsightly spider veins that look scary…..

Let’s talk about spider veins (medically know as Telangectasias) for a second. Spider veins are red and purple blood vessels that occur in patches usually on the legs but can appear other places as well. They are often genetic, but can also be hormonally induced. They may be associated with pregnancy and menstruation or develop when you spend a lot of time on your feet.

Spiders veins do not pose a serious health threat. They can, however, cause localized burning, pain, aching, and discomfort. Mostly they are a cosmetic concern to most women who develop them. If you would like to rid yourself of these tiny pest, we can help. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins. It involves an injection of a safe solution directly into the vein. The tiny vessels scar and will fade from view. The procedure can be completed in our office, is minimally invasive and has almost no downtime.

Now is the perfect time to rid yourself of spider veins and be ready for vein free/ beautiful legs. Call our office today for your free consultation at 248-524-0620.
