Lunchtime procedures due have some restrictions

Wrinkle relaxers such as Botox ™/Dysport™ and Dermal Filler injections are considered “lunchtime procedures” where you can have it done on your lunch hour and resume normal activity “go right back to work” immediately following.  For the most part, this is very true but there are some restrictions that should be considered if you would like to have the best possible result with the least amount of complications which include but are not limited to; swelling and bruising.

Things to avoid after Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

  • Avoid lying down for 4 hours after injection.
  • Avoid working out, Yoga and strenuous activity for 24 hours after injection.
  • Avoid massaging or rubbing the area of the injections for 6 hours.
  • Avoid headbands, baseball caps or hats for 6 hours if you were injected on the forehead.
  • Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol for one day after injections.
  • Avoid blood thinners, NSAIDS, and supplements that thin blood for one day after injections. (Consult your Doctor before stopping prescription blood thinners).
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure (sauna, hot tub, tanning) for one day after injections.

Things to avoid after Dermal Filler Injections

  • Avoid intense physical activity for 24-48 hours after injections.
  • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 24-48 hours after injections.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol or salt for 24-48 hours after injections.
  • Try to keep head elevated for sleep for the first night.

Aesthetic injections can leave a bruise, learn steps to minimize

Whenever you are using a needle to inject there is a possibility of bruising. There are several vessels under the skin that can be damaged during injection. This is normal and can result in bleeding and eventually a bruise. The risk of bruising is greater with derma filler injections such as Restylane® or Juvederm®. This is due to the use of larger caliber needles because of the consistency of the product. Typically fillers are injected deeper into the tissues which also increases the likelihood of getting into a vessel that cannot be seen from the surface. Most side effects are mild to moderate and resolve in under 7 days. The most common side effects that are reported are mild pain/tenderness, bruising, redness, lumps/bumps, discoloration and itching at injections sites.

There is no way to predict whether or not you will bruise or guarantee no bruising. However, we do have some steps that can be taken to help reduce the risk of bruising.

Stop taking any over the counter medications or supplements that thin the blood 1 week before such as:
Aspirin, NSAIDS, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Garlic, Ginger, Ginko Biloba, Ginseng and Green tea.
Check your prescription medications that thin blood such as:
Coumadin and Plavix. Never stop taking these medications without prior approval from the prescribing physician.
No alcohol consumption 24 hours prior to injections.
Icing the area immediately prior to and immediately following can constrict blood vessels to reduce pain, swelling and bruising.
Avoid exercise for 24 to 48 hours after injection. Physical activity increases your heart rate, blood pressure and blood flow. Minimal blood flow allows time for the damaged vessels to repair faster.

Patient education is one of our top priorities. We want to ensure you fully understand our services and feel confident in our quality of care. Call us today to schedule your free consultation. 248-524-0620.

Are Wrinkle Reducers Toxic? Learn more on how they are safe

Botulinum Toxins, such as Botox® and Dysport®, are FDA approved medical treatments for adults to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles in certain areas of the face.  These wrinkle reducers are in fact derived from Botulinum Toxin but they are not harmful in the amounts that we administer to reduce wrinkles. A harmful dose administered systemically would be 2500 to 3000 units.  We normally inject less than 100 units locally to achieve the desired results. These products cause the injected muscle to relax for approximately 3 to 4 months smoothing the appearance of the wrinkle.

Wrinkle reducers have been FDA approved for cosmetic purposes since 2002.  They have been shown to be very safe and effective when administered by trained professionals.  It is important to do your homework and seek out a licensed and certified injector who has been fully trained in safe injection technique.

Still have questions? We offer complimentary consultations. Call today to schedule your appointment to learn how Botox and Dysport can reduce wrinkles. 248-524-0620.

Beauty Sleep, not a myth!

We have all heard the saying “Time to get your Beauty Sleep”.  Although many think it is just an old Wives’ tale, the truth is the amount of sleep you get at night is a critical component of your body and skins health. As a board certified doctor, I like to look at the complete health of my patients to help them achieve their aesthetic goals.   Proper sleep means an increase in growth hormones which allows cells to repair. Without proper sleep the broken down cells accumulate which causes more noticeable signs of aging.

It has been shown that not getting enough sleep can increase levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Increased levels of cortisol causes more inflammation in the body. More inflammation in the skin can cause the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid which are what give skin its elasticity and glow!

Decreased sleep equals decreases moisture levels and lowers pH levels in the skin as well. When your pH levels drop it creates an imbalance in your skin and leaves skin looking dry, uneven, red and can even trigger breakouts. If you have dark circles your lack of sleep could be the cause. Lack of sleep is the number one reason your blood vessels dilate which leads to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes!

Therefore, the wives tale is actually a wise recommendation! Starting today in celebration of National Sleep Day “Get your Beauty Sleep” and you will feel and look more refreshed all day!!

Bellafill  -Making us smile!

I love my career and one of the main reasons is the consistent improvements made in the world of aesthetic injections.  There are so many options for my patients and I am confident there is a product that will work for you. I am excited to announce we are adding Bellafill® to our already comprehensive injectable product line.  Bellafill may be what you are looking for if you have deep smile lines or acne scars.

Bellafill is comprised of polymethyl methacrylate microspheres and bovine collagen. Sounds scientific I realize but easy to explain. These microspheres are building blocks for the skin and add volume. The spheres stimulate your natural collagen production. Which means you skin will continue to improve over time as the collagen rebuilds. Your smile lines can benefit with longer lasting results of up to five years. You will see immediate results due to PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) microspheres.  Once injected the collagen gel immediately reduces the look of the smile lines. Over time the gel is gradually absorbed and replaced by natural collagen stimulated by the methacrylate microspheres.

Bellafill is also FDA approved to treat deep acne scars.  If you suffer from scars that appear pitted, Bellafill is a great treatment option. The indents or pitting of the skin is caused by a loss of collagen to the area.  Injecting Bellafill directly into the scar restarts the collagen building process and gives an immediate filled in/smooth look. The gel composition is 20% PMMA and 80% collagen gel.   As the gel is absorbed into the body the collagen is building giving you longer lasting results and a smoother skin.

Early risks associated with Bellafil are similar with other aesthetic injections with mild swelling and bruising at the injection site.  We offer complimentary consultations for all our injectable services. Together we will put together a treatment plan that is best for your skin and goals.  Schedule your appointment today and discover the exciting world of aesthetic injections. 248-524-0620.

Before & After

How to achieve maximum results with a skin resurfacing treatment.

How to achieve maximum results with a skin resurfacing treatment.

Laser rejuvenation and resurfacing is popular for many reasons. It offers a solution to wrinkles, fine lines, post-traumatic scars, acne scars, sun spots, freckles and/or aging and damaged skin. Many lasers perform best when completed in a series.  However, if you are looking for results in a single treatment, the ActiveFX Laser by Lumenis® is the laser for you.  ActiveFX fractional laser can improve a wide range of skin conditions while refreshing the overall appearance of the skin.

Every patient’s skin is different, which is why a consultation is so important. It provides the opportunity to assess the patient’s condition and do a thorough evaluation of the skin. . This laser uses a high-energy beam of light that causes the skin’s upper layer to peel off and regenerate a layer of healthy new skin.  This achieves a dramatic effect; however, it does require approximately five days of downtime, as your skin will have associated redness and peeling.  You will see a reduction of wrinkles and fine lines as well as a softening of deeper lines. You will also see improved skin tone and texture and immediate contraction of the skin with reduction in pore size. Additionally it stimulates new collagen, you will see plumping of the skin up to six months after the procedure!

Winter months are the optimum time to receive your laser treatment. Call our office today to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Clarissa Kroese or Raquel Merlini, RN and turn back the clock on your skin. 248-524-0620.

Save money on Aesthetic Injections

How can I save money on Aesthetic Injections?

Everyone likes to receive something for less and aesthetic injections are no exception.  The good news is the two major pharmaceutical companies, Allergan and Galderma recognize this and want to reward you for using their products.  Both companies have point reward programs that give you money off your next injection. I know what you are thinking, another reward system to keep track of and we sometimes forget to check if we have points. No worries, we will manage it for you and ensure that you receive your discount! We will also notify you in advance if you have points expiring.

Enrolling in these programs will definitely save you money. During the month of October, Galderma is donating $25 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every NEW consumer member who joins. Save money for yourself and help save a life. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Add Volume to Your Face Without Surgery

My face is starting to sag….What can I do without surgery?

Does the loss of volume in your face have you feeling down or do you keep hearing people tell you that you have a frown?  I see patients all the time complaining that they feel like their faces are falling or that they are getting “jowly,” or look like they are constantly frowning. These complaints are usually due to us subtly or not so subtly noticing signs of aging on our face.   These signs of aging usually start with changes in the skin, fat and muscle layers as well as changes to the bone structure itself.

The perceived volume loss occurs due to fat redistribution, and the bones become thinner and flatter in places.   As we age, this fat/volume loss in the face causes the face to appear “saggy.” Many patients come in wanting to fill in the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, when often times, restoring volume to the cheek area would be much more beneficial.  Injecting filler into the lower face may not always be a good idea, depending on the patient, because it may possibly accentuate the heaviness a patient is feeling. As we age our faces lose their shape. This causes your heart, oval, or round shape to become more square and bottom heavy.  This facial shape of aging can many times be reversed to some degree by restoring volume to the mid-face. This in turn will impact the appearance of the lower face.

Derma filler such as Voluma ® or Restylane Lyft ® to the mid-face will also likely help lift the nasolabial folds and the marionette lines in the lower face as well as at times minimize or improve the appearance of jowls. Fillers can also make the skin appear smoother, plumper and help minimize fine lines in certain areas. So let me turn that frown upside down!  Call our office located in Troy, MI today to schedule a free consultation.

Am I Too Young for Botox?

Some would say Botox®/Dysport® before wrinkles is useless but I beg to differ.  As someone who didn’t start Botox til my late 30’s, I certainly wish I could turn back time!  Botox or Dysport can and is much more frequently being used as preventative maintenance for wrinkles. If you smile a lot (crows feet) or frown a lot (Glabellar or 11’s) these products in your 20’s can prevent the wrinkles from setting in!

By watching someone’s facial expressions you can see where they are most likely to form wrinkles in the future.  Those are the areas where you would want to start these products early. It actually trains the muscle to relax. The good news is you can usually use a smaller dose when using Botox/Dysport preventatively.  You also do not need to be completely frozen for it to work! You can still have some expression while preventing deep lines from setting in! I think it’s a win win!!

Its not too early! Call me to schedule an appointment!

What is the difference between aesthetic fillers and neurotoxins injections for facial aging?

Aesthetic fillers are injectables used to instantly smooth and plump the skin. Most of these are
made with hyaluronic acid. This acid is present in all living organisms. It is natural to your body
and adds volume and restores a more youthful appearance by filling wrinkle lines or areas
needing more fullness. Many of the brands we use in our office are FDA approved for
superficial, medium and deep wrinkles; vertical rhytids (smoker lines), smile lines, nasolabial
folds and marionette's lines. Proven to give beautiful and long lasting results from 6 months
and up to 18 months depending upon the filler selected.

Neurotoxin injections, most commonly referred to as “Botox™”, are injections that smooth
deep facial lines by relaxing the muscles that form facial wrinkles. Most common areas are the
vertical, angry lines between your brows, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. These are also FDA
approved for forehead and glabella areas. Botox, a brand of neurotoxin, has been prescribed
for decades for treatment of muscle spasms and other non-cosmetic areas. Neurotoxin results
last for 3 to 4 months.
