Beauty Sleep, not a myth!

We have all heard the saying “Time to get your Beauty Sleep”.  Although many think it is just an old Wives’ tale, the truth is the amount of sleep you get at night is a critical component of your body and skins health. As a board certified doctor, I like to look at the complete health of my patients to help them achieve their aesthetic goals.   Proper sleep means an increase in growth hormones which allows cells to repair. Without proper sleep the broken down cells accumulate which causes more noticeable signs of aging.

It has been shown that not getting enough sleep can increase levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Increased levels of cortisol causes more inflammation in the body. More inflammation in the skin can cause the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid which are what give skin its elasticity and glow!

Decreased sleep equals decreases moisture levels and lowers pH levels in the skin as well. When your pH levels drop it creates an imbalance in your skin and leaves skin looking dry, uneven, red and can even trigger breakouts. If you have dark circles your lack of sleep could be the cause. Lack of sleep is the number one reason your blood vessels dilate which leads to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes!

Therefore, the wives tale is actually a wise recommendation! Starting today in celebration of National Sleep Day “Get your Beauty Sleep” and you will feel and look more refreshed all day!!

Botox and Filler, learn how they are different.

Many people come into the office confused about the difference between neurotoxins like Botox® and Dysport® and fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®.   While these two treatments can be complementary to each other they are not the same thing.

Botox/Dysport are used to reduce the activity of the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles.  They are often used for dynamic lines which are the lines/wrinkles you see when you animate your facial muscles. They are mainly, but not exclusively, used in the upper face.  Most common places are between the eyes (11’s), forehead, and crow’s feet. This treatment is quick procedure, typically 5-10 minutes, and is done by injecting a tiny needle into the muscle.  There is virtually no downtime.  You may see some temporary redness, swelling, and/or bruising at the injection site.  Results take about 4-7 days to take effect and results typically last around three months. The relaxation in the muscles smooths wrinkles and gives you a more youthful appearance.

Fillers, on the other hand, are used for areas of the face that have lost volume and/or are in need of some overall plumping.  Some fillers are used to fill in an individual’s “trouble’” area with collagen or an agent that helps to stimulate collagen growth others use hyaluronic acid.  Fillers essentially plump and lift the skin.  They are used on wrinkles that can be seen on the face at rest. Some of the more common treatment areas are cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and lips, but they can also be used in other areas as well like your hands. Filler injections typically take anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on areas being filled. Typically there is little to no downtime, however, there is a risk of redness, swelling and/or bruising at the injection site. With hyaluronic fillers results are seen immediately. They may last anywhere from 6 months to more than a year depending on product and area treated. The added volume and softened wrinkles also provide for a more youthful appearance.

While Botox/Dysport and filler treatments are very different, doing a combination of both can sometimes give optimal results depending on how the individual is aging.  Our goal is to give you a relaxed natural look and to not have you appear overdone. Working with a qualified injector is key. Let’s talk about Fillers!

“Fill me up Doc!” Let’s talk about fillers.  Often times when patients come in to see me they know they are seeing volume loss in their faces, but are not quite sure where or how to fix it.  I am asked on a daily basis how I decide which filler to use. While there are several types of fillers out there, for this blog I’m going to discuss the Restylane group of derma fillers by Galderma.

There are five different Restylane fillers; Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne.  All these fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). All of the HA fillers products are tested for firmness and flexibility.

Restylane and Restylane Lyft are all designed for natural looking results with NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized HA) Technology.   This technology creates a firmer gel texture for a more pronounced lifted result. Restylane is typically used for facial wrinkles and folds, tear troughs and lips.

Restylane Lyft is most often used in cheek augmentation and mid-face contouring deficiencies.  It is also the first and only HA approved to treat hands. Restylane Silk was produced to work for subtle lip enlargement and for the lines around the lips.

Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne were created for movement and expression.  These were designed with XpresHAn Technology, which means they are formulated to act like your body’s own naturally occurring HA.  They give just the right amount of lift and have the right amount of flexibility to allow you to show a range of facial expressions without looking unnatural.  The only difference between to two products is the amount of crosslinking of the HA. Restylane Refyne I like to use for fine lines anywhere on the face or for subtle lip enhancement. Restylane Defyne   I use this for areas on the face where more volume is needed to be restored and for deeper lines of expression.

As you can see from the video the consistency of the products in the Restylane family is quite different which is due to the science behind the development. A good injector must understand all the products ingredients, where and how they are to be administered and what you the patient’s desired outcome is.  Be sure to choose a qualified licensed medical professional for your treatment.

Fat Grafting

Fat Grafting

How can we use fat from one area of the body to enhance another area? Fat transfer (fat transplantation, fat injection or fat grafting) is a medical procedure that uses the patient’s own fat tissue from their thigh, lower stomach or inner knee to increase the volume of fat in the subcutaneous area of the body. Uses continue to develop but some of the most current applications include injection of fat into the breast for augmentation or after breast cancer surgery, cheek and chin augmentation, wrinkles next to the mouth (marionette lines) and the hollow areas under the eyes.

In most applications, the fat is injected down through the skin and into subcutaneous tissue and sometimes muscle to provide a better chance for the fat cells to find a nearby blood supply and survive. Some of the fat does not survive, so typically a surplus amount of fat is injected. Fat transfer provides excellent results, and it is readily available! If you don’t want to use synthetic fillers, fat grafting would be an excellent option for you.

3D Body Simulator

NEWS RELEASE: 3D Photographic Simulation Brings a New Dimension to Plastic Surgery at Dr Michael J. Schenden’s Office.

New technology allows patients to preview how they will look with aesthetic procedures. Click HERE to see the 3D simulator in action!!!

Troy, Michigan– If you are one the thousands of people each year considering aesthetic plastic surgery, Dr Michael Schenden has some good news for you. Recent advances in three dimensional (3D) photography combined with revolutionary new software allow prospective patients to preview what they will look like as the result of breast augmentation, facial procedures, and more, well in advance of any surgery.

Both the VECTRA® 3D camera and Sculptor software which make this possible were developed by Canfield Imaging Systems of Fairfield, NJ, the world’s leading provider of medical photography systems. The process starts with a VECTRA 3D session which produces a three-dimensional photograph of the patient. Then, using Sculptor software, the surgeon is able to simulate the expected results of a variety of aesthetic procedures.

“My patients are going to absolutely love this,” said Dr Michael Schenden. “For the first time, they’ll be able to see a 3D picture of themselves with their new look. Because it’s in 3D, I can rotate their picture to any viewpoint and they can really examine the desired result. We can make changes here and there and agree on a final look in advance, and this truly helps them make a decision”.

Dr Schenden has more than 25 years of experience, offering professional, personalized medical care in aesthetics such as: breast augmentation, breast lift, facelifts, nose surgery, eyelid surgery, liposuction, tummy tucks and more. Sculptra – facial injectable for more youthful appearance

sculptra-troy-miSculptra Aesthetic can provide and restore a youthful appearance that lasts up to two years. Sculptra is the first facial injectable that gives you subtle results over time. It is a type of facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, which induces your body to make new collagen. The main ingredient is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades.

Sculptra takes a more subtle approach and gives a more natural looking appearance. The results don’t appear over night. On average the patient would receive two to three injection sessions over a few months, which allows for a gradual facial restoration and enhanced youthfulness. The most common areas of the face that are treated are the lines between the nose and the mouth (nasolabial folds), lines framing the mouth (marionette lines) and cheeks.

The option of subtly restoring the facial fullness is an additional benefit to the fact that it lasts up to two years, especially for those men and women who want to enhance their appearance but don’t want it glaringly obvious the next day. Sculptra Asthetic, a subtle approach.

Juvederm: Minimize the effects of aging without going under the “Knife”

For those men and women who are looking for a way to restore their fresh, plump, youthful face without going under the “knife” – facial fillers like Juvederm are an excellent option. Whether the patient is seeking fuller lips and cheeks or a more defined chin, aesthetic enhancements like Juvederm make it entirely possible.

Juvederm is the smooth gel filler that is used to instantly smooth away wrinkles around your mouth and nose by adding volume to the hollowed areas. Commonly injected areas are the nasolabial folds (vertical lines from the nose to the corner of the mouth), marionette lines (vertical lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin) and vertical lip lines (facial wrinkles around the lips). With just one treatment, it is possible to get smooth and natural-looking results that can last up to a year.

The fact that Juvederm is so fast to administer and can be done in a regular in office visit, makes it even more desirable to my patients who are looking for a non-invasive way to restore their youth. And, the fact that the results last for up to a year is an additional bonus!

Everyone will notice but no one will know.
